Craft events at Riddle's Court this autumn

Arts and craft lovers are invited to a series of hands-on workshops at Riddle’s Court this autumn.

Sessions are hosted by experienced artists and tutors, offering the opportunity to create your own unique pieces of art which could also serve as unique gifts this festive season. Click through the events below for further information or to purchase tickets.

The events are hosted by the Patrick Geddes Centre at Riddle’s Court, which offers a varied seasonal programme of cultural and learning events, exciting workshops for schools and quality public tours of Riddle’s Court and Edinburgh’s Old Town.


2 November: Artists Books Workshop with Chris Kent

This Artists Books Workshop with Chris Kent will be a practical course with students producing their own artist book. All abilities welcome. The Artists Books workshop will be a practical course, students will produce their own artist book. (A unique object that uses the form of a book to list, illustrate, inform, question and entertain). Techniques used will include print (monoprinting), 2D and 3D possibilities, handwriting, arts and crafts, abstraction, surrealism and pop art.

9 November: Decorative Spine Sketchbook Workshop with Susie Wilson

One day workshop creating an artist’s sketchbook with a decorative sewn spine and fold out pages. No experience necessary. This one day workshop will teach students how to make a sketchbook with a decorative sewn spine and fold out pages. The beauty of this book structure is the sewing allows the book to be filled after making and it opens flat for ease of drawing and sketching. Cover papers will be made using printmaking techniques inspired by the building of Riddle’s Court.

22 November: Victorian Christmas Advent Calendar Workshop with Jaimie MacDonald

Create a fun and minimal waste reusable advent calendar inspired by the Victorians’ love of Christmas and the work of Patrick Geddes. During this workshop you will create a simple reusable advent calendar together as a family. You will be taking inspiration from the work of Patrick Geddes by decorating your calendar using simple motifs and shapes from nature. You will also be invited to write meaningful seasonal notes to go inside each ‘door’ of the calendar. A lovely way to make your Christmas merry, bright and a little bit more eco-conscious too.

23 November: Printmaking inspired by The Evergreen: Autumn: tutored by Lee-Ann Cardle

A printmaking workshop led by Lee-Ann Cardle and inspired by Patrick Geddes’ Evergreen books; suitable for beginners. This workshop introduces you to lino printing techniques and materials for handprinting. Using ideas from the Arts and Crafts movement, illustrations from Patrick Geddes’ Evergreen books and the glorious setting of Riddle’s Court to inspire your artwork, you will spend the morning designing your work, carving out the image and printing in the afternoon. Lee-Ann trained in printed textiles and graphics at Heriot Watt’s Textile campus and has worked over the years for various companies as a print and product designer as well as passing on her skills as an arts tutor.
